WAAA National Refugee Advocacy Days
Centering Lived Experience in Federal Policy

National Refugee Advocacy Days is one of the few moments each year where our communities speak directly to those in power. During the August recess, we mobilize over 300 immigrant and refugee leaders from across the country to meet with their representatives. This is a critical opportunity for “Community Architects” to not only champion inclusive policies but to share firsthand how specific executive orders and past legislation are impacting the safety and stability of our neighborhoods.
Empowering Advocates through Action:
We provide the tools and training necessary for “Civic Rejuvenators” to move from the periphery of politics to the center of the American story. Participants receive specialized coaching on how to navigate the federal system, including:
- Navigating Congress: Understanding the distinct roles of the Senate and the House of Representatives.
- Strategic Outreach: Learning how to identify, reach out to, and maintain long-term relationships with their specific representatives.
- Effective Storytelling: Training in how to use lived experience to shift the narrative from “crisis” to common-sense governance.
Our Impact and Goals:
- Direct Advocacy: Empowering leaders to meet virtually with congressional offices to advocate for just refugee and asylum policies.
- System Modernization: Pushing for a functional U.S. Refugee Admissions Program (USRAP) and the protection of asylum as a human right.
- Resettlement agencies
- Building Bipartisan Support: Educating lawmakers on the vital “new energy” that immigrants and refugees bring to their districts.
If you’d like to represent your state and meet virtually with your congressional offices, please RSVP by Wednesday, July 15, 2026.
When and Where
Legislative meetings will occur virtually from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. local time, August 17 – 21, 2026.
Why It Matters
Lawmakers need to hear directly from the refugee and immigrant communities they represent to ensure federal policy reflects the reality of our shared lives. Sharing your lived experience and local perspective helps move the conversation from “crisis” to common-sense governance, building a more welcoming and just America. True vitality requires new energy, and your voice is the most powerful tool we have to ensure federal policy reflects our shared values of family, hard work, and mutual aid. We invite refugees, immigrants, faith leaders, and veteran allies to join this collective effort to co-author a future where every neighbor belongs. RSVP by Wednesday, July 15, 2026.
